Automatic writing assessment evaluation for language learning
A learning and assessment platform to make it easier for teachers to assign writing exercises to language learners.

What I did.
While at Twenty Ideas, I worked on LearningWrite — an online assessment and practice tool for language learning. Free-form written assessments are some of the hardest types of assignments to assess in an automated system (especially before LLMs). This puts a burden on instructors to manually grade every assignment.

Assignment management
We created an assignment management system so instructors can easily find and preview available prompts, create assignment details and review student completion rates and results.

Delightful design to keep students writing
One challenge with free-writing responses for students is to get a large enough response to adequately assess mastery. I created simple animations that helped to encourage users to keep writing.

In-classroom research
As a part of my work on LearningWrite I did in-class pilot programs with teachers and students to iterate on designs, understand user needs and pain points, and to evaluate requirements for product market fit.
Role management ecosystem
Ed tech tools need to work for all of a school’s users. The LearningWrite platform offers specialized portals for students, teachers, administrators, and content managers, designed to meet the unique and overlapping needs of each role.
